About the Indiana Afterschool Network
The Indiana Afterschool Network was recently awarded a grant from the Charles Stuart
Mott Foundation to formerly develop a statewide afterschool network. The Indiana Afterschool Network will provide both the
structure and mechanisms for bringing together a range of stakeholders with a common vision of improving the lives of youth
through school and community-based afterschool
1 programs. Our vision is to provide a web of support throughout Indiana, ensuring every child
has access to a high quality, enriching afterschool program through lasting partnerships between communities and schools.
The Indiana Afterschool Network will accomplish the three goals of the Statewide Afterschool Network:
(1) Create a sustainable structure of statewide, regional, and local partnerships, particularly
school-community partnerships, focused on supporting statewide policy development; (2) Support the development and growth
of statewide policies that will secure the resources that are needed to sustain new and existing afterschool programs; and
(3) Support statewide systems to ensure programs are of high quality. The following strategies will be implemented to support
each of the goals of the Network, respectively:
1.
Develop a sustainable infrastructure: Community and school partnerships will be fostered to create a sustainable infrastructure of support for statewide
policy development.
2.
Raise awareness and support: A
statewide afterschool communication strategy will be developed to unite afterschool providers under a common umbrella that
consistently and intentionally informs public policy.
3.
Focus on quality and innovation: A statewide system for identifying and sharing best practices will be developed to ensure high quality program
implementation. Best practices associated with process and outcome evaluation strategies will be disseminated across the state
to allow reporting of impact.
1 The term afterschool is used interchangeably
with .out of school time. and/or .extended learning opportunities. referring to programs for school-age children and youth
operating on a routine basis outside regular school hours or days including before, after, weekend, and summer. Programs are
provided in partnership between schools and communities and make intentional efforts to impact the social, emotional, physical
and academic needs of students.
Attn: Out-of-School Time program providers
OST program providers in Indiana
have formed a coalition which will promote OST programs; raise awareness; create a state-wide board of advocates who are “recognizable/notable
names”; make connections and create relationships to get sustainable funding; create and integrate standards for in-school
and after-school programs and for staff training statewide.
This website has been created for this coalition.
